Wow! We can’t believe we are nearly half way through Year Four. This is an update of our class information for the rest of the Spring term. We hope your children are enjoying Year Four as much as we are enjoying teaching them.

Reading and Spellings

Please ensure children read at home with an adult for at least 5-10 minutes in the evenings. This is incredibly important for all areas of literacy (please see English in the curriculum area of the website for more details). Spellings are given out on a Tuesday and tested the following Monday. We would appreciate if the children practice their spellings in the space provided so this can be monitored.

Our main the second half of term, is going to be geography based. We will be looking at human features of the United Kingdom, focusing especially on the cities and regions of our country.

We will be learning about the functions of different kinds of teeth as well as our digestive systems in our humans as animals topic. We will also be continuing our focus on living things and their habitats in preparation for our Juniper Hall trip.

We will be continuing our dance and netball units of work on a Monday morning. Please ensure your child has the appropriate, clean kit for indoor and outdoor PE, otherwise they will be using spare kit kept in school.

The children will be continuing their learning on the religion of ‘Islam,’ focusing on Muslim beliefs and traditions.

Mrs Marijnen and Miss Rose are pleased to welcome our Year Four children back for the beginning of a new year. In PSHE we are exploring our wishes and dreams for the future and how to achieve these goals and this ties in perfectly with all our New Years resolutions. Our main topic for the Spring Term, is Invaders and Settlers, in which we will be exploring the Viking and Anglo-Saxon invasions. The most important aspect that we will be working on is to develop the children's concept of timelines and chronology. In art we are going to be studying the impressionist artist Van Gogh, and creating pieces of art work based on his techniques. .

During literacy in this half term, we are reading the book 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey. We are continuing our story focus, and we will particularly be taking a grammar and spelling focus. We will be learning how to use apostrophes in different situations (e.g for possession and contractions, e.g shouldn't) and will be encouraging children to build words using prefixes and suffixes.

The children worked incredibly hard during the Autumn half term on their number focus: This half term, we will be covering decimals, shape, position and direction and measurement. We will be sending home lots of number homework, which will ensure maximum retention while the children focus on other areas.

Reminders: Homework will be given out on a Thursday. This homework needs to be given back by the following Wednesday to allow time for marking. P.E will be held on Wednesday this year so please remind your children to bring in their P.E kits.
Please also send in old shirts to keep uniforms clean in art.
Polite reminder: First instalment for Juniper Hall!

Many Thanks

Mrs Marijnen and Miss Rose
